U.S. citizens may enter the territory of the Republic of Hungary without a visa and may stay there for a maximum period of ninety days during the six months from the date of his/her first entry without a separate permit provided that he/she meets the conditions required for staying. However, U.S. citizens with the intention to enter employment or to stay more then 90 days in Hungary DO NEED visas to travel to Hungary. (Holders of Permits to Reenter or Refugee Travel Documents need visa to travel to (or through) Hungary!)
